The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a broad range of contacts with International R&D actors, in academia as well as in industry. The annual budget of NTNU is around € 700 million, 25% of which is externally funded. NTNU is an active participant in the EU R&D Framework Programmes and participates in 105 FP7 projects. NTNU is Norway’s primary institution for educating the nation's future engineers and scientists, and has a special interdisciplinary potential. Today the full range university of NTNU  encompasses 7 faculties and 48 departments. It has approximately 23000 students; half of whom are studying technology or the natural sciences. About 370 PhD-degrees are awarded yearly within the fields of technology, science, arts and humanities, social sciences and medicine.

NTNU Sustainability is the university’s Strategic Thematic Area on Sustainable Societal Development (2014-2023), and is based in a long history of sustainability research. NTNU combines the many disciplines necessary for the practical and holistic study of sustainable processes.

The Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management (IØT) offers education and research in the cross-disciplinary field of technology management. Research is practiced in close co-operation with Norwegian industry, through the development of management models, tools and methods. Central areas of research are Corporate Social Responsibility, Energy Economics Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Health, Environment and Safety, Industrial Economics, Management Operation Analysis, Organisational Development, and Project Management.
